Bowden Sunmaze

In June we had gone to the Zoo and we received free passes to the Bowden Sunmaze. So, today was a gorgeous sunny fall day and we drove north to Bowden to check out the Sunmaze. We didn't know what to expect and we were not disappointed. There were animals to pet, a hay ride, face painting, pumpkins to buy and of course mazes. There was a bale maze for the little ones, a rope maze, a stepping stone maze, finger mazes and of course the giant corn maze and sunflower maze. In the corn maze we followed the well worn paths but still ended up in a few dead ends. We found the hill sundial and the grain bin house. We left the corn maze and went to find the sunflower maze. Teagan stopped to get her face painted and we found out you had to walk through the corn maze to get to the sunflower maze. Meanwhile we went on a tractor hay ride and learned more about the farm from our driver Farmer John. His great-grandparents started this farm in 1920. The maze is made up of 250,000 corn plants and 100,000 sunflowers. They grow over 40 varieties of potatoes and have a u-pick garden with all kind of vegetables. They also grow flowers including 40,000 lilies in a u-pick garden. Teagan and I are going to make a trip back next summer to check out all those flowers. They still had gladiolas for sale. They have green house like structures over the flowers and more delicate vegetables to protect them for hail and extend the growing season. After the tour Teagan and I fed the horse and donkeys some grass. Then we headed back into the maze to get through the to the sunflowers. We ate our way through the maze and then went to say good-bye to the animals. We bought a very expensive and gorgeous pumpkin and then headed home. It was a great day!
